Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea presents Rebecca Horn – Cutting Through the Past, the first retrospective dedicated to the artist in an Italian public museum institution. The exhibition stems from a collaboration with Haus der Kunst, Munich, following the artist's solo exhibition organized by the same institution in 2024, and is curated by Marcella Beccaria in the Long Gallery of the Castle.

The exhibition acknowledges the fundamental role of Rebecca Horn (Michelstadt, 1944 – Bad König, Germany, 2024) in the development of contemporary artistic practice, through works that create an unsettling performative theater, in which fundamental themes such as time, memory, desire, and power relations take center stage. Rebecca Horn's work proposes an inseparable intertwining of the human and the mechanical and anticipates issues at the heart of the current cultural debate, in a context defined by increasingly complex technologies.

The exhibition presents a selection of installations, sculptures, videos, films, and drawings that range from the artist's beginnings in the sixties to recent works, with important loans of rarely exhibited works from the Moontower Foundation, established in Bad König, Germany by the artist herself. The exhibition path includes iconic kinetic machines such as Pfauenmaschine (Peacock Machine), originally conceived by the artist for her participation in documenta, Kassel in 1982, to the recent Hauchkörper (Breathing Body), 2017, as well as monumental installations Inferno, 1993-2024, Turm der Namenlosen (Tower of the Nameless), 1994 and Concert for Anarchy (Concert for Anarchy), 2006. In the central section of the exhibition, visitors will encounter Horn's debut performances through the videos Performances I, 1970-1972, Performances II, 1972 and Berlin (10.11.1974 – 28.1.1975), 1974-1975. As with the initial presentation at Haus der Kunst, they will be projected on a large scale after being recently digitized. Enhancing the core of important works by Horn present in the Castle's collection, the exhibition also features the film Der Eintänzer (The Gigolo), 1978, and the engaging installations Cutting Through the Past (Tagliando attraverso il passato), 1992-1993, the work that gives the exhibition its title, and Miroir du Lac (Mirror of the Lake), 2004.
