The Castello di Rivoli Museum of Contemporary Art is organizing a personal exhibition dedicated to the artist Otobong Nkanga (Kano, Nigeria, 1974) curated by Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, Marcella Beccaria and Marianna Vecellio.
One of the most important artists of African origin, Nkanga tackles urgent issues related to the ecological crisis and the environment, the exploitation of resources and sustainability, exploring the stories of colonialism with the consequent inequalities and repercussions on the social fabric.
The exhibition at the Castle is developed as a large site-specific project, specially conceived for the rooms of the Castle. Drawing an unprecedented landscape inside the museum rooms, the installation will include large irregularly shaped carpets inspired by the outline of minerals, such as quartz and malachite, whose healing properties have been known since ancient times. Long hand-woven cords will culminate in sculptural objects and elements, both organic and handcrafted, endowing the work with a performative and relational component.
