Dominique White, winner of the ninth edition of the Max Mara Art Prize for Women, presents the exhibition Deadweight  at the Collezione Maramotti, consisting of a group of works created in 2024.After the first stage of the exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery in London (July 2 - September 15, 2024), White has designed a new layout adapted to the spaces of the Collection.Deadweight  is a stimulating exploration of rebellion and transformation, and includes four large sculptures that continue the artist's interest in creating new worlds around the concept of "Blackness" and the allure of the metaphorical power and regenerative force of the sea.The title  Deadweight derives from a nautical term ["deadweight tonnage", meaning gross tonnage] that calculates the total load of a ship to determine its ability to float and function as intended. White intentionally reverses this meaning, challenging the canonical notion of stability and indicating the possibility of emancipation through destruction. The works - angular swaying structures created from manipulated metals in forms that evoke anchors, the hull of a ship, carcasses or mammal skeletons - combine strength and fragility. Lost or abandoned material forms that, through White's treatment, become symbols of challenge.
