Located at Rua de Entre‑Quintas 220, adjacent to the charming Jardins do Palácio de Cristal, the Quinta da Macieirinha hosts the Museu Romântico, inaugurated in 1972 as an extension of the Museu da Cidade di Porto. This 18th-century building was the residence of the exiled king Carlo Alberto di Savoia, who spent the last months of his life there before dying in 1849.
The museum faithfully recreates a bourgeois 19th-century environment: accompanied visitors can explore the billiard room, admire the small chapel, the tea room, the room where the king died, and the reception hall with perfectly preserved original furnishings. Each room, decorated with period furniture, paintings, porcelain, and fabrics, tells the lifestyle, aesthetics, and romantic culture of 19th-century Porto.
The classical architecture, the garden with views of the Douro River, and the intimate atmosphere create an immersive and poetic experience. The museum was renovated in 2017 to integrate new themes related to nature and romantic literature, through projects like "Metamorfoses" that interact with the historical furnishings.
