Geological and Paleontological Museum

The Geological and Paleontological Museum is located in the historic center of the city of Padua and is part of the University Museums. Among the rooms of the Museum, visitors can travel in time, exploring the exotic lost paradises of the Sala delle Palme and the Sala di Bolca, or admiring the protagonists of the Ice Age, who braved endless winters thousands of years ago. These are collections of great historical and scientific value, sometimes unique finds that have always aroused the interest of paleontologists and that, even today, are studied with modern techniques by researchers from all over the world. In fact, although fossils represent “petrified” organisms, they are able to provide valuable new information not only on the history of life, but also on other crucial and extremely topical topics, such as climate change and the exploitation of georesources. One of the main efforts of the Museum is to ensure that these extraordinary finds, which seem extremely durable and resistant but in reality can be very ephemeral if stored in an inappropriate way, can be preserved unaltered for as long as possible, to give way to the general public to continue to admire them and for paleontologists to continue studying them. The added value of the Museum of Geology and Paleontology is undoubtedly its location in the splendid setting of Palazzo Cavalli, a sixteenth-century building whose ground floor rooms are sumptuously frescoed and from which an amazing staircase leads to a no less sumptuous noble floor.
