The Geology Museum of Oviedo is located on the ground floor of the building of the department of the Faculty of Geology of the city university.

Inaugurated on November 15, 2001, it occupies an area of one hundred and twenty square meters where various exhibitors with 29 different thematic units have been installed. Temporary exhibitions are also set up in the museum along the corridors. Following an important renovation, it was reopened in 2017: the new spaces created were designed to accommodate the ever-widening museum offer. The geology museum has always paid attention to an extremely varied audience, but has mainly focused on the less experienced in geology.

As for the collection, the museum is currently organizing an interesting exhibition on the sand coming from the intertidal zone, that is, the one subject to tides or wave motion.

Sand samples are sent to the museum by the visitors themselves.

The museum then proceeds to the preparation of the samples with different processes which include: washing, desalination, drying, sieving and packaging.

The final samples, once their main components have been identified, enrich the museum's funds and will then be reused in temporary exhibitions if necessary.
