The Civic Museum of Contemporary Art "Michele Cascella" Art Gallery

The Civic Museum of Contemporary Art "Michele Cascella" is located in the historic center of Ortona, in the province of Chieti. The Museum is located inside Palazzo Farnese, the famous residence of Margaret of Austria commissioned to Giacomo della Porta between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The noble floor of the building still retains the decorations and frescoes dedicated to Margaret of Austria. The Museum is dedicated to the artists Basilio Cascella and his sons Michele and Tommaso. The museum collection houses a small section dedicated to the works of the Cascellas, including ceramic sculptures, canvases and architectural projects. The main floor is divided into different thematic areas dedicated to Basilio, Michele, Tommaso and Gioacchino Cascella. Instead, the large auditorium hall houses the works of Francesco Paolo Michetti, another Cortonese artist. In all, the works are 53 and among the most important are: the portrait of Luisa De Benedictis mother of Gabriele d'Annunzio, the Procession of the Virgins of Rapino and some lithographs made by the Cascellas. The ground floor of the building houses the “Ex Libris Mediterraneo” collection with the original posters, documents and geographical reproductions that once belonged to Margaret of Austria. Today the Museum is home to temporary exhibitions of contemporary art, cultural events and conferences in the spaces of the Auditorium.
