Parish Museum of Sacred Art of Ornavasso

Parish Museum of Sacred Art

The collection houses valuable works of sacred art (sculptures and paintings) once scattered in the churches of the town and datable between the fourteenth and eighteenth centuries. The oldest of the statuary works is the wooden sculpture of S. Antonio Abate (14th century) once preserved in the alpine chapel of Casalecchio; there are also a Madonna del Rosario from the fifteenth century, a statue of S. Marta from the sixteenth century and several important works of the seventeenth century including four precious reliquaries attributed to the sculptor Giulio Gualio di Antronapiana and, of particular artistic interest, the group of the "Compianto di Cristo Morto ”, made up of eight poplar wood statues painted with gilding (1612). Finally, the first wooden altar in Baroque style (late 17th century) from the Sanctuary of the Guard is worthy of note. Among the paintings, there is a seventeenth-century Last Supper by an unknown artist from the crypt of S. Marta in the parish church, and five large paintings depicting St. Peter and the four Evangelists once placed in the Sanctuary of the Guard. The historical library annexed to the museum contains works, from the 16th to the 19th century, generally of theology, coming from the private library of Don Giovanni Battista Cracchi who was parish priest of Ornavasso from 1849 to 1903. The parish historical archive, modernly organized and easy to consult , preserves important documents for the history of Ornavasso, including a printed copy of the Statutes of 1575.
