The Monumental Complex of Santa Chiara in Naples is located in the historic center.
The complex was built in 1310 by the will of King Robert of Anjou . Originally the complex housed two convents, one for men and one for women. The church has a Gothic architecture and was restored and partially renovated by the architect Vaccaro in 1742. The majolica pillars are certainly the most iconic elements of the complex . The majolica cloister of the monastery with the Italian garden and fountains is one of the most beautiful and famous in the world. The decorations recall vegetable festoons, popular scenes and mythological figures. Of great interest are the frescoes in the cloister depicting saints, allegories and scenes from the Old Testament .
Inside the Monumental Complex of Santa Chiara there are: an Opera Museum, a Roman thermal area dating back to the 1st century AD and a crib from the 18th and 19th centuries according to the Neapolitan tradition . The Museum is divided into thematic areas with the archaeological section and the historical-artistic section . The historical-artistic section is made up of statues, paintings, marble friezes, liturgical items and linear reliquaries . The archaeological area presents the remains of a Roman thermal establishment discovered in 1943.
