Castel dell'Ovo is located in Naples and is the oldest castle in the city .
It is located between the Chiaia and San Ferdinando districts on the seafront of via Partenope . The name derives from a legend dating back to the Latin poet Virgil.
The poet hid a magical egg in the dungeons that had the task of keeping the fortress standing.
This tradition was also handed down over the centuries by other sovereigns. It is said that during the time of Queen Joan I, the castle suffered a lot of damage and collapses. The Queen had to confess that she had replaced the egg to prevent panic and fear of new and serious misfortunes from spreading in the city. Although the castle was largely destroyed, it still stands in all its majesty.
Castel dell'Ovo passed into the hands of several sovereigns, in particular the Anjou and the Aragons who used it as a strategic residence, thanks to its position on the sea.
Inside , the rooms are preserved in perfect condition, thanks to recent renovations , and host conferences, meetings and events.
Castel dell'Ovo is one of a kind thanks to the beautiful view over the Gulf of Naples.
