The Musée du Vieux Montpellier is a museum in Montpellier dedicated to the history of the city. The museum is housed in the Hotel de Varennes, a medieval building in the historic center of the city. The museum presents collections of objects related to the history of Montpellier from the Middle Ages up to the twentieth century. The entrance hall houses some of the most important pieces of the collection, including the statue of the Virgin and Child from the 13th century and its tabernacle and the "cabinet doré des consul", a large 17th century cabinet made by a carpenter of Montpellier. Other rooms of the museum are then the procession hall, which presents some portraits of donors and benefactors, religious statuettes and sticks of the processions of the brotherhoods of penitents of Montpellier. The 18th-century hall also features furniture from this era, including a table pendulum and a mother-of-pearl table. The room of the revolution exhibits objects, paintings and engravings related to this period, including the stones of the Bastille recovered by the citizens of Montpellier. In the corridor, several engravings show the history of the city. Among the major pieces of the collection there is undoubtedly the "Black Virgin", a Madonna and Child in polychrome wood from the thirteenth century. Its origins are not well known, but it is undoubtedly a work of great value given the refinement of its features and the sweetness of expression.
