Palazzo Dugnani is a historic palace based in Milan and dating back to the eighteenth century, then restored during the following century in the Rococo style. The Palazzo was built by the Cavalchini family and remained there until 1730, the year of the sale of the Palazzo to the Casati family. In this period Tiepolo was called to fresco the ceiling of the Ballroom with the narration of Scipione and Massinissa, in order to celebrate the Casati family itself. The frescoes were torn in 1944 for fear that they would be damaged during the World War. Today they are found on canvas in the same original positions in the Palazzo. In 1753, it was sold to the Dugnani family who made the house one of the major centers of cultural thought in eighteenth-century Milan. In 1835, upon the death of the last heir Dugnani, the Palazzo passed into the hands of Giovanni Vimercati. Vimercati set up a small natural history museum there thanks to its personal naturalistic collection. Ten years later the Palazzo was sold to the Municipality of Milan and until 1977 it housed the Alessandro Manzoni Civic School for Women. Today it houses the Cinema Museum, the Serre workshops and some temporary exhibitions.
