From 3 March to 2 April 2023
Thirteen state museums in Lombardy interpreted by thirteen young Italian artists, in a public commission from the Regional Directorate of Museums in Lombardy (Ministry of Culture), created with the scientific collaboration of the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Milan - Cinisello Balsamo.
An extensive project that lasted over ten months, culminating in an exhibition promoted by MiC (Regional Directorate of Lombardy Museums) and the Museum of Contemporary Photography (MUFOCO) with the Municipality of Milan - Culture and produced together with Palazzo Reale on the occasion of MuseoCity, open to the public free of charge from 3 March to 2 April 2023 in the rooms of the Apartment of the Princes of the Milanese palace.
Monuments celebrated all over the world such as the Cenacolo Vinciano and the Certosa di Pavia, archaeological realities of the Roman era among the most important in Europe such as the Grotte di Catullo in Sirmione, significant medieval and Renaissance testimonies (the Scaliger Castle of Sirmione, Palazzo Besta in Teglio), the Valle Camonica of petroglyphs and Romanisation: museums, monuments, palaces, parks which, taken together, make up the most visited museum in Lombardy. The artists involved describe these heterogeneous places in a free and personal way, revealing a potential still partly to be discovered through the most diverse languages and practices, raising questions, discovering unpublished stories, giving a voice to visitors, custodians, objects and landscapes.
The comments of the public in front of Leonardo's Last Supper compose a poem. The Expiatory Chapel of Monza, built where King Umberto I was assassinated, becomes the imaginary place of a space mission that sheds light on the contrasts of history. The voice of a teenager tells the daily life in the Roman Villa of Desenzano. The inhabitants of Teglio give voice and movement to the frescoes of Palazzo Besta. They are examples, which we are invited to discover together with the looks and stories of the custodians of the Scaliger Castle, the nocturnal fauna that populates the rock carvings of Naquane, and a multitude of other stories. The exhibition presents images (colour and black and white photographs, synthetic, moving), audio works, sculptures and other forms of installation, created between January and July 2022. Varied, sometimes surprising approaches that make up a single itinerary : looking together at the heritage that makes up our history and participating, today, in the construction of its multifaceted identity.
