closed MILAN in the works of Marco Crippa

The show

The Permanente Museum presents the exhibition MILAN in the works of Marco Crippa from 30 November 2023 to 7 January 2024. 50 years of street painting and thus pays homage to the city and one of the local artists who have celebrated it for over fifty years of activity. The exhibition, curated by Mimmo Di Marzio, includes around sixty works, belonging to almost six decades of activity by Marco Crippa, an artist considered the last "en plein air" painter in Milan.

An eagerly awaited exhibition, over thirty years after the exhibition that the Municipality of Milan dedicated to the artist on the great squares of Lombardy (1989), which testifies to Marco Crippa's passion for his city, his only model. An anthology that reveals to the public an original and unexpected vision of well-known and lesser-known places in the Milanese city. Although the artist's beginnings are linked to multiple trips (Spain, France, Holland, Switzerland), Milan, his hometown, will always remain the undisputed protagonist of his works and his great workshop. A city made of glimpses immortalized in his works, prosaic and at the same time dreamlike, nostalgic and poignant in its popular soul full of liveliness and mystery. In the Sixties, Milan was a world to discover, the absolute Italian capital of European art. Crippa lived the magical decade to the full that characterized the cultural panorama and, in general, creativity in the shadow of the Madonnina.

The artist, an outsider in the artistic panorama of the 1960s and 1970s, painted in the street, depicting every corner of the city, from the alleys to the most famous squares. In the evening he attended the Brera Academy of Fine Arts, where his natural talent soon found expression in a painting without rules: instinctive , exuberant , gestural . He is fascinated by the works of impressionists and expressionists, admires the art of the Renaissance and the old masters in general. His strong and complex personality shuns schools, groups and trends. Marco Crippa immediately placed himself on the artistic scene as a solitary painter, an isolated phenomenon.

Crippa's is an original technique that over time will produce surprising results, combined with a temperament that will not know crises and uncertainties, always supported by an unchanged and wonderful inspiration. Those who observed him painting (by day, by night, under the snow, in some city in Italy or Europe), remember a painter who squeezed tubes of color directly onto the white canvas, remember the rapid, broad and generous gesture of the spatula and material works with strong chromatic contrasts; oils in front of which it is not possible to speak of impressionism, since the impressions succumb to the more urgent and vibrant language of emotions .
