From 23 February to 30 July 2023
Gian Maria Tosatti (Rome, 1980; lives and works in Naples) is one of the most interesting Italian artists of recent years, who in 2022 represented Italy at the 59th Venice Biennale. Tosatti's work focuses on the concepts of community and memory, in their historical, political and spiritual value.
With an unprecedented intervention in the space of the Shed, Tosatti offers the visitor the possibility of dealing with a dimension never presented before in his practice. The exhibition consists of two cycles of works presented for the first time in Pirelli HangarBicocca. Responding to the request for a retrospective project, Gian Maria Tosatti nonetheless worked on new works that were the synthesis of the feelings that have animated his research over the last twenty years. The corpus of works develops around large format elements, which represent a dialogue with the Zeitgeist (Spirit of the time) and the sentiment of the generation to which the artist belongs. The works are conceived as "mirrors", open questions that directly involve the visitor.
Through this new body of works, Gian Maria Tosatti captures the most essential aspects of the human condition in a complex moment like the present one, of a society poised between catastrophe and evolution. An experience that the visitor can enjoy hic et nunc and which takes place without predetermination, free from conditioning. The works reconnect to the very moment in which reality is revealed, as evoked by the title of the exhibition "NOw/here" whose terms can have a single value "now" (now) and "here" (here), or consequential " nowhere” (no place). This project follows the artist's poetic path with continuity and coherence, showing itself full of references to many of his past works from Testament - devotions X of 2011, to the most recent Episode of Odessa (2020) and History of the night and destiny of comets ( 2022). In “NOw/here” Tosatti seems to place himself in front of History and interpret it not as a chain of events, but as a feeling, trying to portray the moment in which we are involved.
