This year marks the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and Italy. Diplomatic relations are more than just a connection, but a history of cultures of the two countries exchanging influences and creating value. To commemorate this anniversary in April 2024, the Center for Oriental Culture and Design (OCDC) and the ADI Design Museum in Milan, in collaboration with the embassies of both countries, are organizing the DBEW 2024 exhibition.

The exhibition, presented by the ADI Design Museum and the Compasso D'Oro award, will be on display at the ADI Design Museum from 16 April to 5 May, between the Salone del Mobile and Milan Design Week. Under the direction of DBEW, “Design Beyond East and West,” this year’s theme is “Ottchil Furniture and Design.”

Design, a future perspective from tradition

What is the beauty that transcends the boundaries between East and West? Design Beyond East and West (DBEW) is a collaborative exhibition hosted by OCDC and ADI Design Museum, celebrating the 140th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Korea and Italy by showcasing projects that encompass both Eastern and Western aesthetics .

Ottchil, a timeless material

Ottchil, a traditional Korean lacquer made from the sap of the Ott-chil tree, stands out as an extraordinary material that combines durability and natural beauty, free of chemical additives. It has excellent preservation qualities and heat resistance. The exhibition aims to connect the past and future by integrating Korean and Italian design philosophies with Ottchil, which has been scientifically validated as a healthy and sustainable material.
