The Frac Sud invites Boris Charmatz, a great international figure in contemporary dance, and retraces his choreographic research with him, presenting a set of films made throughout his career with two accomplices, Aldo Lee and César Vayssié.

Six films will be shown in the exhibition space, including three previously unreleased films, including a new film that the Frac Sud produced with the artist: TRANSEPT, 2023 based on the solo SOMNOLE. For Boris Charmatz, dance has always embraced beyond a reflection on its foundations and its history, culture in a total, generous and open form. Also music, theater, literature, poetry, cinema and of course contemporary art have always nourished his research and reflections in creative back and forths which extend the choreographic forms often imagined outside the consecrated spaces of dance. Dancer, choreographer, but also creator of experimental projects like the ephemeral school Bocal, the Musée de la danse, or his structure Terrain, Boris Charmatz never stops inventing new forms, questioning certain codes or conventions attached to dance, to “decenter” it.

The exhibition Danses gâchées dans l'herbe offers audiences a unique “museum” journey into the abundant artistic work of this artist-thinker through six films made between 1999 and 2023.

Echoing the reflections led by Boris Charmatz around the concept of the Dance Museum while he directed the National Choreographic Center of Rennes and Brittany between 2009 and 2018, the works are presented in the form of living paintings, by means of screens on the ground allowing a frontal address and encouraging one to take the time and measure of contemplation. The exhibition is thus a way of creating new experiences for the visitor spectator who finds himself, as in many of Boris Charmatz's creations , actively solicited, physically placed at the same level as the dancers, in a proximity, and an intimacy that belongs to him. The body of the dancers is then the place where the transmission of emotions takes place, receptacles of memories which solicit the spectator's body as much as their mind.

By decompartmentalizing disciplines, by allowing the meeting of so-called scholarly cultures with so-called popular ones, Boris Charmatz makes his research on dance accessible to as many people as possible and reinforces the feeling of a shared culture, the only one capable of making possible and doing experience public space.

Exceptionally, the Frac Sud is offering you a multiple-entry ticket so you can take the time to see and rewatch the films in the Boris Charmatz exhibition.
