From 7 October to 28 January 2024
From 7 October 2023 to 18 February 2024 Fondazione Palazzo Te, Palazzo Ducale di Mantua and Galleria Borghese come together in an ambitious project that pays homage to Rubens, the painter who so deeply drew inspiration from classical culture, leaving a profound and indelible mark on the courts Italian and European. Rubens! The birth of a European painting is in fact the initiative that brings together the three exhibition events organized by the three institutions to celebrate the master of Flemish origins who with his work became the absolute protagonist and archetype of the Baroque: three exhibitions that are part of a broader cultural operation dedicated to the relationships between Italian culture and Europe seen through the eyes of Rubens.
From 7 October 2023 to 7 January 2024, in Mantua Palazzo Te dedicates to the artist Rubens at Palazzo Te. Painting, transformation and freedom, a research exhibition that focuses in particular on the relationship between the Flemish painter and the mythological culture he encounters in Italy. Curated by Raffaella Morselli, the exhibition aims to create a correspondence between works and decorative and iconographic motifs of the Palace: a paradigmatic journey that demonstrates how the Renaissance suggestions developed by Rubens in the Mantuan and Italian years continued, evolving, in the painting of his maturity, to the point of transmitting itself in the intellectual and artistic legacy left to his students. The works in the exhibition were therefore chosen based on the dialogue they link with the myths and the interpretation Giulio Romano made of them in the various rooms, factors which contributed to generating in the Antwerp painter an uninterrupted harmony with the Renaissance and the Myth.
