Ars Canusina inaugurates the thirteenth chapter of the cycle «Dèibambini», dedicated since 2006 to children's creativity.
Curated by Massimilano Vitali and Chiara Bombardieri, the project was conceived by MUSEC and shared from the beginning by the Local Health Unit of Reggio Emilia, with the collaboration of the Diocese of Reggio Emilia and Guastalla (Diocesan Museum), and the Association Ars Canusina of Bibbiano (Reggio Emilia) and investigates the interaction between art, craftsmanship, and psychopedagogy through the textile and ceramic works created by the children of the Colony-School "A. Marro", under the guidance of psychiatrist Maria Bertolani Del Rio (1892-1978).
To understand the story of the Colony-School "A. Marro" and the art therapy experience of Ars Canusina, it is necessary first of all to remember that its parable took place, almost entirely, in Europe intimidated by the irrational policies of totalitarianism and the cruel attempt to "cure the race starting from maternity and childhood".In a context marked by psychotherapeutic conceptions still predominantly positivist, thanks to the innovative, courageous, and diligent work of Maria Bertolani del Rio (1892-1978), hundreds of children with psychiatric or behavioral problems were able to significantly improve their condition and in many cases be integrated into social life.A significant part of the therapy followed in the Colony-School was the artisanal and artistic application of a real "ornamental alphabet" drawn from the motifs of the Romanesque sculpture of Reggio Emilia: familiar signs in the imagination of children and teenagers who found a way to express through creativity an innate need for harmony and "regularity", gradually gaining a quieter, more stable, and orderly sense of their sensory and human experience.
