The City Museum - Luogo Pio Arte Contemporanea is located in the historic center of Livorno. The Museum was founded in 2018 and aims to enhance the artistic heritage of the city of Livorno. In fact, the museum collection is divided into a city collection and a contemporary art section. The city collection is a historical and artistic evolution of the city from its origins to today. The city collection is located in the ancient Bottini dell'Olio building and today preserves a large eighteenth-century oil warehouse, which represents its original activity. The exhibition itinerary develops through works of art, photographs, archaeological finds and memorabilia. The contemporary art section is instead preserved in the deconsecrated church in Piazza del Luogo Pio. The church still preserves the Baroque paintings in perfect condition thanks to the latest restoration. Among the works present here are "the Great Reptile" by Pino Pascali and other important artists of the twentieth century such as Manzoni, Tancredi, Parmeggiani, Baruchello, Castellani and Melotti. Today the museum spaces host temporary exhibitions and a municipal library, thanks to the city redevelopment project.
