The show

The cultural pole Le Clarisse of the Grosseto Cultura Foundation participates in the Beauty Week 2022 with the exhibition "Peace bearers / the wayfarers" by Sandro Chia, from the Ticci Collection. The inauguration is scheduled for Saturday 22 October at 10.30 with free admission for the whole morning.

The Tuscan painter Sandro Chia (Florence, 1946) is one of the best known protagonists of the Italian Transavantgarde. He also lived in Germany and - for two decades - in New York: as a citizen of the world, his vision of art is based precisely on the experience of travel and on the desires and hopes of the one who leaves, who leaves his country to discover new worlds and travel paths useful for spiritual enrichment. His is one of the most brilliant careers of contemporary Italian art with exhibitions, retrospectives and works in permanent collections in museums and galleries around the world. His works are (or have been) exhibited at Moma in New York, at the Royal Academy in London, at Palazzo Pitti and at the National Archaeological Museum in Florence. In 2010 the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rome hosted a retrospective of his, curated by Achille Bonito Oliva. Sandro Chia currently lives between Miami, Rome and Montalcino. «The image of a traveler - Chia states - is my favorite theme, a figure that moves between heaven and earth, surrounded by the landscape, possibly accompanied by pets. The wayfarer is for me the most fruitful theme, richer in pictorial and ideal consequences.

In the end, painting means this: stalking a subject from a distance, stalking an image, following its traces, discovering its traces, erasing the traces. It means forgetting oneself in the landscape of the picture just sketched, becoming the mirror of the image and almost by chance, inadvertently, entering the picture. A few steps inside the painting and the painting becomes the theater of self seduction, a few steps inside the painting and the painting becomes a self-portrait. Another step or two and you leave the picture, leaving the image, the shadow, the astral body there ». The metaphor of the wayfarer is useful to understand Chia's particular vision of art: «Many people - he declares - believe that art comes from something positive or elevated within us, that it is a humanistic enterprise. I disagree, I'm not even sure it comes from us. It probably comes from something outside of us, from nature, from everything around us, and we don't use the center but the emptiness around it. Perhaps we are not even the source, but it is given to us and it passes through us ». Therefore, according to Sandro Chia, art - like travel - assumes a liberating and therapeutic function: «It could be said that the colors used in my painting, in addition to making a painting eloquent, have a therapeutic effect. Through painting, colors are administered as a medicine, a remedy for our and others' ills ».
