From 29 January to 13 March 2022
The Villa Croce Museum of Contemporary Art is pleased to announce the first solo exhibition in Italy by Irish artist Mark Cullen, Towards Super-Connection, created with the generous support of the Irish Embassy and Culture Ireland and kindly hosted from January 28 to March 13 at the Camino Room of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Villa Croce, Genoa.
The exhibition consists of a modular installation consisting of rods created using bamboo, aluminum, PVC and plastic that form geometric intersections derived from Buckminster Fuller's geodetic design concepts that give the structure a futuristic and vernacular appearance at the same time.
The structure is subjected by the artist to a preservation process where each element is carefully laminated by hand as a sign of protection and conservation as happens for the satellite components coated with a gold or aluminum film to protect them from cosmic radiation. This action by the artist represents both a meticulous meditative process and a gesture towards the safeguarding of a natural material such as bamboo by completely subsuming its essence: exploiting its form for a new esoteric purpose - that of making art.
Towards Super-Connectios is a portable installation and exists in a significant relationship with the place of its manifestation. It derives from a concept of quantum theory in which the quantum state of a particle is related to that of every other particle in that particular system. Towards Super-Connection explores, not only through the site-specific installation but also through the drawings on paper and the lightbox, both on display, a dystopian present where nature sublimates itself to the needs of a system of structures and constructive forms: a mutable system where the model exists as a code inherent in its parts. It is evident that in Mark Cullen's research the spatial investigation is recurrent, the representation of figurative primeval origins that appear as a 3D representation of generative natural elements that are the basis of the Universe itself.
