From 27 March to 10 July 2022
The exhibition in Forlì, Maddalena. The mystery and the image can be visited from 27 March to 10 July at the San Domenico Museums . A grandiose path retraces the figure of Magdalene from the iconographic precedents of the pre-Christian classical era, centered on the aesthetics of pain and the theatricality of emotions, along the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the Baroque , up to the nineteenth and twentieth century representations in which the figure of Magdalene becomes the emblem of the protest and the drama of an era.
Art, literature and cinema have dedicated hundreds of works and events to Maddalena. Above all art, placing it at the center of its production, and giving life to masterpieces that mark, along the texture of time, art itself and its developments. And as in a mirror, every age has looked at it, looking at itself; he contemplated it, seeking the ideal of himself, of his own image; he watched and spied on her, discovering his vices within his virtues.
The itinerary of the exhibition in Forlì winds through 12 sections that tell the aesthetics of pain in ancient art, training in the Middle Ages, Giotto's turn to the late Gothic, the humanistic perspective, the formal tension of the sixteenth century and the sensuality of the seventeenth century . We then move on to the neoclassical revival, the religious nineteenth century and the symbolist anxieties up to the twentieth century, which gave back to the figure of the Magdalene the sense of the mystery of human life.
Among the great masters fascinated by the figure of the Magdalene and on display at the San Domenico Museums in Forlì, there are Masaccio, Crivelli, Van der Weiden, Bellini, Perugino, Barocci, Savoldo, Mazzoni, Tiziano, Veronese, Tintoretto, Domenichino, Lanfranco, Mengs , Canova , Hayez , Delacroix, Böcklin, Previati , Rouault, Chagall , De Chirico , Guttuso, Melotti, Sutherland, Bill Viola .
