The Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence is located in the city center inside the headquarters of the Academy of Fine Arts .

The Gallery and the Academy of Florence were founded in 1784 by Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo of Lorraine .

The Gallery houses a vast collection of sculptures and pictorial works . The picture gallery was enriched with many works collected by Pietro Leopoldo since 1786. The initial idea was to create a Michelangelo museum to celebrate the fourth centenary of the Master's birth. In 1875 it was decided to reproduce the casts of sculptural masterpieces such as: the Moses from the Medici tomb, the Rondanini Pietà, the Vatican Pietà, the Prisoners and the Christ of Minerva .

Among the most important works of the Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence , Michelangelo's David certainly stands out, symbol of Florence throughout the world, the "Maestà" by Cimabue and Giotto , "Adoration of the Magi" by Gentile da Fabriano, the "Supper of Emmaus" by Pontormo, the "Baptism of Christ" by Verrocchio and Leonardo .

The Gallery and the Academy of Florence today has an exhibition divided into thematic areas from the room of paintings from the late fourteenth century to the nineteenth century. Of great interest are also the drawings and musical instruments in the collection.
