Orsanmichele complex

The Orsanmichele Complex is a unique and extraordinary monument because civil and religious functions are sealed in it.

Antonio Paolucci called it "Temple of work", because it was built by the liberal arts who made the greatness of the free Florentine Commune and found representation in it. It is also, as the unforgettable mayor of the city Piero Bargellini said, “the place where the wheat of the municipality was kept; the Wheat of the population and the poor, which the provident republican systems tried to defend against rationing speculations at all times, but especially in the years of famine ”.

In the mid-fourteenth century the granary was consecrated to Christian worship. In the Orsanmichele Complex on the first floor are preserved the original sculptures, the work of the most famous Florentine artists from the fifteenth to the sixteenth century, which adorned the niches outside, on the four sides of the imposing stone building, halfway between the Palazzo della Signoria and the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore.

On the second floor of the Orsanmichele Complex Museum , at the top of the building, you can see a remarkable, unique panorama of Florence.

The Church inside which is the grandiose marble tabernacle of the Madonna delle Grazie is regularly officiated and holy masses are celebrated there.
