The retrospective exhibits the ceramic and terracotta works of the artist, who unfortunately passed away prematurely.
Simone Crespi (1961 – 2021), originally from Rome, completed his training in Faenza. In the years 1982-83, he attended the two-year advanced course in Stoneware and Porcelain with an artistic focus at the Faenza Art Institute, where he graduated in June 1984. He then pursued the two-year advanced course in Art of Maiolica at the same institute, where he met and studied under the sculptor Carlo Zauli, who guided him through the technical and artistic phases of the sculptor's latest works, encouraging and advising him in his ceramic activities. He was selected for the Faenza Prize in 1989 with the work "Baffi," white stoneware with black engobe.
In 2010, he won a scholarship from the Japanese government and conducted a research program at the Academy of Arts in Kyoto, in the Artistic Ceramics Section. During this period, he exhibited at the Kyoto Art Museum, traveled through many cities in Japan visiting temples and artworks.
In Rome, he worked in his studio and participated in solo and group exhibitions, including the XII Quadriennale.
His art is characterized by a deep connection with ancient civilizations reinterpreted in a contemporary key, using ceramics as the main medium. His works range from sculpture to painting, reflecting an aesthetic that references and engages with the past while also existing in a fluid and ever-evolving present.
The exhibition "The Art of Simone Crespi" is a synthesis of contemporary vision and universal-existential themes, approached with a style that oscillates between neosurrealism and ironic references drawn from ancient figurative repertoire.
Art critics have noted that Crespi is not tied to a single artistic movement, but his work serves as a bridge between the classical world and the modern Western society. By expressing a simple and immediate language, he aims to be universally understandable. His works, while evoking archaic images, possess a modern and personal style, closely linked to the contemporary world.
The exhibition is curated by Sandro Conte in collaboration with La Bacc Gallery, the cultural promoter of the Crespi collection.
