The Nelson Monument, at the top of Calton Hill, is a symbol of Edinburgh dedicated to Admiral Horatio Nelson. Built between 1805 and 1816 in a tower and observatory style, its silhouette resembles a maritime signaling tower: a tribute to the hero of the Battle of Trafalgar.
With its nearly 30 meters in height, the structure houses an internal spiral staircase that leads to a panoramic viewpoint. From the highest point, you can admire a spectacular view of the historic center, Edinburgh Castle, the Firth of Forth, and the imposing Arthur’s Seat.
A unique feature is the Time Ball, an hourly ball that descends along a pole every day at 1:00 p.m.: it used to be used to synchronize the clocks of Scottish naval crews. This function continues to attract curious visitors interested in maritime and scientific history.
Inside the monument, there is a small exhibition that illustrates Nelson's life, the history of the tower, and the importance of maritime signaling in the 19th century.
