Art Collection North Rhine-Westphalia - K20

The Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen - K20 is one of the two locations of the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Düsseldorf's museum of modern and contemporary art. The K20 collection focuses on Western and American works of art from the first half of the twentieth century, while the other location, K21, focuses on works after 1960. The two locations are characterized by their complementarity: while the K20 has a contemporary structure (built in 1986), with wavy modular lines that give the structure dynamism, the K21 is housed in an ancient baroque palace in the city. Inaugurated in 1961, it is the state collection of the Land of North Rhine-Westphalia. The combination of the collections of the two locations makes this museum one of the most important of its kind at an international level. The works of art in the K20 collection range from Fauvism to Expressionism, from metaphysical painting to Cubism, passing through the works of the group of artists "Der Blaue Reiter" to those of Dadaism and Surrealism. The collection includes works by the most famous artists of the early twentieth century, including Picasso (with 12 works in total, encompassing almost all the important creative phases of the artist), Matisse, Mondrian, and several others, as well as an extensive collection of around 100 drawings and paintings by Paul Klee, offering a unique and well-rounded look at European artistic production of the first half of the 20th century.
