Art Collection North Rhine-Westphalia - K21

Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen - K21 is one of the two locations of the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Düsseldorf's museum of modern and contemporary art. The K21 collection focuses on works after 1960, while the other venue, the K20, focuses on Western and American art from the first half of the twentieth century. The two locations are characterized by their complementarity: while the K20 has a contemporary structure (built in 1986), with wavy modular lines that give the structure dynamism, the K21 is housed in an ancient baroque palace in the city. Inaugurated in 1961, it is the state collection of the Land of North Rhine-Westphalia. The combination of the collections of the two locations makes this museum one of the most important of its kind at an international level. The K21 collection includes works by Jackson Pollock (including the monumental "Number 32" from 1950, one of the "drip paintings" that fills an entire wall and one of the most important examples of abstract expressionist painting), Mark Rothko, Frank Stella or Pop Art works by Robert Rauschenberg (including Wager, created in 1957, one of the largest and most complex of his "Combine Paintings"), Jasper Johns or Andy Warhol; part of the collection also consists of works by Joseph Beuys, Gerhard Richter, Tony Cragg, Sarah Morris, Katharina Fritsch and Imi Knoebel. There are also important installations of rooms, photographs and cinematographic and video works by contemporary artists.
