Oil Museum

Museum of Oil and Castanese Identity

Welcome to Castell'Umberto. Museums play an important role in strengthening the identity of territories, through the rediscovery and enhancement of local culture and traditions. The historic center of the Municipality of Castell'Umberto, seat of the ancient Castania, preserves a large part of the local historical heritage including the restored building called the Dominican Frantoio (1508/1518), which represents the typical example of rural industry existing in the Nebroid landscape and linked to the prevalent cultivation of olive trees for the production of oil. The oil mill, which remained in use until 1965, was reconverted in 2014 into a cultural space for getting to know the Castanese area. Inside the new structure there are three spaces used for three different specific functions: 1. zone A with millstones, tanks and grinding wheels as an educational path; 2. zone B with space dedicated to the presentation of the Heritage of Borgo di Castania; 3. zone C with room equipped for cultural events. The Museum has always had the function of center for cultural events, obtaining positive opinions from visitors who have used the free access service provided by the Tourist Information Office of the Municipality of Castell'Umberto.
