From 13 March to 1 September 2024
Museion, the museum of modern and contemporary art in Bolzano, inaugurates the Poetry in the box exhibition at Museion Passage and at the Piccolo Museion – Cubo Garutti. A tribute to the history of the Salt Market and to Ugo Carrega created in collaboration with the Mart, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Trento and Rovereto.
The exhibition recounts the twenty-year connection that exists between Mart and Museion, which share the extraordinary collection of the Nuova Scripture Archive, donated to the two museum institutions by Paolo Della Grazia in 2020 and of which Ugo Carrega is a fundamental figure. In particular, the exhibition revolves around the concept of the box – sometimes a work of art in itself, sometimes a container of Carrega's works – and pays homage to the history of the Salt Market of which the artist was curator and director. Between 1974 and 1989 this Milanese artist-run space saw countless artists linked to visual poetry gravitate around it, and they will be part of the exhibition.
Ugo Carrega was a multifaceted figure: artist, gallery owner, poet, publisher and curator active in the field of verbovisual research in Italy between the end of the 1960s and the 1990s. In 1958, together with the artists Anna and Martino Oberto, he created the artist magazine "Ana Etcetera", the first in Italy to present itself as a container that hosts, in a loose format, contributions from various cultural operators.
This first editorial experience was followed by that of the magazine he founded "TOOL: notebooks of symbiotic writing" where he developed the concept of symbiotic writing , a meeting between word and matter, which would then lead him to coin the term "New Writing".
