closed The Carracci frieze - Works in comparison

The show

On the occasion of the celebrations for the 400th anniversary of the death of Ludovico Carracci, Palazzo Fava. Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Bologna opens the doors of the Noble Floor to the public with the famous Carraccesque cycles of Giasone and Medea - the first collective enterprise of Ludovico, Agostino and Annibale - and the adventures of Aeneas by Ludovico and their pupils.

For the occasion, the museum puts in dialogue the frescoes that revealed the Carracci revolution to the world with 31 works including paintings, sculptures and installations of the twentieth century from the collection of the Cassa di Risparmio Foundation in Bologna, many of which have never been exhibited to the public before: a transversal comparison between eras and styles, in search of thematic or formal affinities between ancient, modern and contemporary works.

"The Carracci frieze - Works in comparison" - open to the public from 22 November to 16 February 2020 - is based on a research work in the caveaux, conducted by Benedetta Basevi and Mirko Nottoli, art historians of Genus Bononiae, to identify works that have thematic connections. Thus Galileo Chini 's The Mad Dictator - exhibited for the first time - painted on the occasion of the celebrations for Hitler's arrival in Florence in 1938, refers in its ferocious monstrosity to the menacing Polyphemus met by Aeneas and his companions in Sicily; while the nudes by Nicola Samorì, one of the most popular contemporary artists, document the cyclical return of the classic in the history of art, similarly to what the three Carraccis did at the end of the sixteenth century. And again the tumult of the Battle of Giuseppe Maria Crespi, which refers to that of the battles of Jason, or Mimmo Palladino 's Salomé , a tragic heroine like the Aeneid's Dido. Among the works on display there are also the Alpestri stones by Fortunato Depero and the Luminous Sculpture by Marco Lodola, which in their bright colors and the joyfulness of the composition recall the theme of the game of friezes in the Cesi Room, including archery competitions, races and tournaments. taken from the sixth book of the Aeneid.
