From 15 March to 5 May 2019
An exhibition to rediscover a great classic of the comics of the origins , today considered the precursor of the modern graphic novel. Since November 24, 1918, the release date of the first episode in the “ Chicago Tribune” , the Gasoline Alley strip has spanned a hundred years of history , recounting the life of ordinary people in the face of the great events of the twentieth century with poetry and humor. A monumental work that has outlived its author and appears to us today as a single great novel made in real time. The Frank King exhibition is dedicated to this unique and surprising case in the history of comics. A century of Gasoline Alley supported by the Cassa di Risparmio Foundation in Bologna and Genus Bononiae. Museums in the city, in the spaces of Palazzo Fava in Bologna. Curated by the Hamelin association together with Giovanni Nahmias, TV author and comic book scholar, the exhibition brings for the first time to Europe a selection of almost 50 original plates , organized in a path that immerses the visitor in the extraordinary world created by Frank King in the over the decades. BilBOlbul International Festival of Comics, which since 2017 has exploded its programming with the intention of covering the whole year with exhibitions, meetings and training projects, enters Palazzo Fava, which becomes the place of choice for comics in Bologna. The juxtaposition of the two exhibitions, which can be visited thanks to a combined ticket, compares two important moments in the history of comics and two different interpretations of the relationship between humor and the story of reality.
