The show

From 27 October 2023 to 11 February 2024 , Genus Bononiae, together with Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio in Bologna, presents at Palazzo Fava. Palazzo delle Esposizioni , Concetto Pozzati XXL , the first anthological exhibition of the artist held in a museum after his death, curated by Maura Pozzati, art critic and teacher, curator and director of the Concetto Pozzati Archive.

Approximately fifty works from the Concetto Pozzati Archive - some unpublished or no longer exhibited for some time - including large-format paintings, three-dimensional works and on paper, such as the monumental installation Dopo il tutto (1980) made up of 301 drawings, make up an organic exhibition and fascinating, which helps to shed light on the author's most significant and least known production. Pozzati had long dreamed of holding an exhibition of large-scale works in Bologna. Genus Bononiae and the Concetto Pozzati Archive realize the artist's desire, paying homage, with this exhibition, to his vast pictorial, graphic, intellectual and human production.

Concetto Pozzati XXL outlines a journey that is not chronological but divided by theme, suggesting an intimate dialogue between the painter's paintings, the frescoes and the architectural and decorative elements of Palazzo Fava. The works chosen for this exhibition, displayed in the 5 rooms of the Piano Nobile and in the rooms of the Galleria Floor, cross and well illustrate the main phases of his career, starting from the informal climate of the late 1950s, passing through the iconic works of mid-60s, attributable to the "Pop" period, up to the production of the 70s - the least known - which was affected by the conceptual and experimental climate of the time, to reach the dense and fleshy painting of the 80s, 90s and 2000, which records the artist's interest in everyday and affectionate objects, up to the latest dazzling series, Vulvare, in 2016.

The exhibition will return for the first time a complete image of Concetto Pozzati: not only a visual artist, but an all-round intellectual. He was in fact theorist and critic, wrote about art and curated contemporary art exhibitions in Italy and abroad, becoming artistic director of the Casa del Mantegna in 1998; he was also a passionate collector, admiring the work of other artists and encouraging generations of young and emerging people; he was actively involved in politics, covering the role of Councilor for Culture of the Municipality of Bologna from 1993 to 1996; he taught painting for many years at the Academy of Bologna after teaching in Florence and Venice and directing the Academy of Urbino. The major art critics from the second half of the twentieth century until today have written about his work, such as Giulio Carlo Argan, Guido Ballo, Giuliano Briganti, Filiberto Menna, Lea Vergine, Alberto Boatto, Giorgio Cortenova, Enrico Crispolti, Tommaso Trini, Renato Barilli, Flavio Caroli… and many others.
