Guggenheim Bilbao

The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is one of the most important contemporary art museums in the world and is one of the museums belonging to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation.

The museum, inaugurated in 1997, from an architectural point of view is an example of deconstructivism and is in fact formed by the superimposition of several complex volumes. The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao has quickly become the symbol of the city and attracts many visitors every year. The museum occupies a total of 24,000 m², of which 10,600 are exhibition spaces.

The exhibits in the museum change very frequently, and feature works from the 20th century at their center.

The permanent collection contains mainly works of art from the twentieth century, European and American as well as those of Spanish and Basque art.

Among the works of the collection it is worth mentioning the spider "Mama" by Louise Bourgeois made in 2001 and exhibited outside the museum; "Puppy" by Jeff Koons, or the gigantic reproduction of a dog studded with plants and flowers; "The time machine" by Richard Serra, an aspiral-shaped sculpture that occupies an entire gallery and in which people are invited to walk.

Other artists featured in the museum's collection are Mark Rothko, Robert Rauschenberg, Jean Michel Basquiat, Jenny Holzer and Christian Boltanski, Willem de Kooning, Robert Motherwell, Clyfford Still, Jim Dine, Yves Klein. More recent are the works Robert Morris, Donald Judd, Carl Andre, Sigmar Polke, Gilbert and George, Richard Long, Jannis Kounellis, Mario Merz and Julian Schnabel.
