Azkuna Center Alhóndiga Bilbao

The Azkuna Center in Bilbao is a cultural center of reference for citizens, in fact it aims to help society build a conscious critical and artistic thinking. The building, formerly a cereal market and a space for storing wine, has been completely reconverted. Currently the building occupies the old building designed by Ricardo Bastida between 1905 and 1909.

The modernization project was entrusted to the French architect Philippe Starck, and between 2001 and 2010 the works were carried out.

On May 18, 2010, the cultural center later called Centro Azkuna was inaugurated to pay homage to Iñaki Azkuna, former mayor of the city.

Today the Azkuna Center is a multifunctional space that promotes different types of cultural initiatives including exhibitions of art, photography, applied arts and also dance performances, plays, films and so on.

Among the spaces stand out the Mediateka BBK, which collects more than 70,000 titles - including books, magazines, films and video games - and rests on three essential pillars: scientific dissemination, the impulse to reading and writing and technological innovation. Its charming appearance preserves the essence of the original industrial style and is an ideal refuge to write or read a good book.
