Archaeological Museum Bilbao

The Archaeological Museum of Bilbao is located in the old train station that once connected Bilbao with Lezama.

The Museum occupies an area of more than 3000 square meters dedicated to the different phases of Basque history from the Palaeolithic to the Modern Age.

In the rooms you can find about 500 objects from the permanent collection which overall consists of 18,000 pieces.

The eras covered range from the Neolithic, Iron, Ancient Rome and the Middle Ages. The finds preserved here come from Lemoa, more precisely from Axlor and from the Arlanp Cave or from the Forua deposit, in Urdaibai. Also kept here are everyday utensils such as pots, dishes, keys, axes, iron wedge, coins. The collection also includes objects from archaeological sites such as the Santimamiñe cave.

The pride of the collection of the Archaeological Museum is the wreck of Urbieta, a medieval ship found in 1998. The boat, from the mid-fifteenth century. The boat is 12 meters long, four meters wide.

In the museum there are also funerary steles from San Pedro de Elorriaga (dated 1st-4th century) and the funerary equipment recovered in the Pico Ramos Cave (Muskiz). Given the desire to always keep up with the times, the museum also presents the exhibitions in a digital and interactive way, including the urban evolution of the city of Bilbao since its foundation.
