Victor Hugo's birthplace is located in the historic center of Besançon. The writer and ideologue was born there on February 26, 1802. It officially became a house-museum in 2013, the Maison Natale Victor Hugo is configured as a place of literary memory. On the ground floor of the museum they are evoked maintained by the writer with his hometown. Along the staircase leading to the first floor, 19th century French history is associated with key events in the life of Victor Hugo. The first floor is entirely dedicated to the deepening of the character, represented in all its complexity: Victor Hugo was not only a novelist, but also a poet and playwright, as well as a politician who transmitted his ideas and convictions through his acts, his speeches and his writings. The museum displays Victor Hugo's major humanist political struggles for freedom of expression, human dignity, children's rights and peoples' rights through numerous inscriptions and wall quotes.
The museum also organizes numerous temporary exhibitions to explore the themes of the permanent collection.
