The Ole Bull Museum on Lysøen, part of the KODE network - museums and homes of composers in Bergen, is located on the enchanted island of Lysøen, in the municipality of Bjørnafjorden, just south of Bergen.
The villa was built between 1872 and 1873, designed according to the wishes of the famous violinist and composer Ole Bull, in collaboration with the architect Conrad Fredrik von der Lippe. The result is a fanciful mix of Swiss chalet style and Moorish architecture, characterized by a tower with a Russian onion dome, exotic wooden decorations, terraces, and romantic gardens.
The artistic villa is surrounded by a park with 13 km of trails, ponds, gazebos, and panoramic views, built by Ole Bull himself. An old eighteenth-century courtyard, a viewpoint with a watchtower, and numerous relaxation areas immersed in nature.
Although the villa is currently closed for restoration, the island is open to the public all year round. From May to September, the electric museum boat "MS Ole Bull" is in service, accessible to people with reduced mobility, connecting the Buena pier to Lysøen.
