Three new exceptional loans tell Giovanni Carnovali, known as Piccio , one of the most experimental authors of the nineteenth century, from 11 March to 12 June 2022 , in the Accademia Carrara in Bergamo . A project curated by M. Cristina Rodeschini, which invites the public to an unprecedented journey to rediscover the author, together with narratives linked to the museum's collections, to the history of Bergamo.
The three loans, of exceptional quality and rarely exhibited to the public are " Portrait of Gina Caccia (The green necklace) " (1.) from a private collection, " Landscape in Brembate Sotto " (2.) from the Gallery of Modern Art Ricci Oddi from Piacenza, and “ Portrait of Vittore Tasca ” (3.) from the Bettino Craxi Foundation - ETS.
Piccio in Carrara is also an opportunity to discover three areas of study within the museum itinerary. Very gifted since adolescence, Giovanni Carnovali lived closely the history of the Bergamo museum and the school of painting, led by Giuseppe Diotti, attending it for five years. On the first floor in the Vitali Wing, after the recent restoration, the monumental work with the Death of Antigone, Diotti's artistic testament, is permanently exhibited to underline the constitutive link between museum and school.
He will immediately appreciate the skills of Piccio Guglielmo Lochis , collector, one of the most important patrons of Carrara, who had himself portrayed by the painter in 1835 (room 3). The museum holds about fifteen paintings by the painter. In room 26 he presents a wide selection, compared with some works by his travel companions, from Giacomo Trecourt to Francesco Coghetti, who shared the years of his apprenticeship with Piccio and, from different points of view, the great changes that 19th century painting he was preparing to complete.
