closed Fabiano Ventura. On the trail of the glaciers

The show

From 15 September 2019 to 17 February 2020 the Civic Museum of Bassano del Grappa hosts the photographic exhibition "On the trail of the glaciers", the great project created by photographer Fabiano Ventura to document the effects of climate change on the most important glaciers on Earth.

The exhibition traces the five expeditions of the project in Karakorum, Caucasus, Alaska, Andes and Himalayas, with an exhibition that offers a direct comparison between historical and modern photographs. What emerges is a sense of urgency for the protection of glaciers, sensitive indicators of the health of our planet.

"On the traces of the glaciers" combines photographic comparison and scientific research, analyzing the effects produced by climate change starting from the observation of variations on the glacial masses. With 6 expeditions carried out over 10 years, the project aims to produce photographic comparisons between images taken by explorer photographers of the late 1800s and early 1900s and photos taken today from the same observation point and in the same period. of the year. The historical black and white images, duly restored, are in fact placed side by side with the modern ones made by Fabiano Ventura with large format cameras in film up to 4x5 inches.
The strong communicative power created by photographic comparisons, together with the results of scientific research carried out in the field, thus develops in the observer a greater awareness of the impact of anthropic activities on the climate, raising public awareness on the need to safeguard natural resources for future generations.

The exhibition displays the results of the first five expeditions of the photographic-scientific project, which took place in the mountain ranges of the Karakoram, the Caucasus, Alaska, the Andes and the Himalayas. Together with a team of researchers, Fabiano Ventura retraced the traces of the photographer-explorers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries (including Vittorio Sella, Giuseppe Chiardola, Mor von Dechy, William Osgood Field, Harry Fielding Reid, Alberto maria De Agostini, Bentley Beetham and Edward Oliver Wheeler) taking new photographs, superimposable, in fact, to those of the past. The comparison testifies to the retreat of the glacial masses, providing an immediate idea of the extraordinary climatic variations that our planet is experiencing.

An exhibition of international importance, at the same time linked to the traditional biennial exhibition of Bassano Fotografia 2019. Trespassing (14 September - 3 November 2019) - festival organized by Pro Bassano in collaboration with the Municipality of Bassano del Grappa, now in its sixth year edition - which aims to inform and sensitize the visitor towards a very important and delicate issue for our contemporaneity. Photographic comparisons clearly show the alarming process of retreating glaciers around the planet and the changing landscapes that had remained unchanged for centuries. The ice walls, even hundreds of meters high, have now given way to proglacial lakes and entire valleys, once covered with ice, are now boundless woods or verdant grasslands.
