The Antikenmuseum Basel und Sammlung Ludwig, located in the heart of Basel's historic center (St. Alban‑Graben 5), is the only museum in Switzerland entirely dedicated to ancient art of the Mediterranean, from Prehistory to the 7th century AD. . Inaugurated in 1966, the museum expanded in 1986 with the addition of the Ludwig Collection and now occupies two neoclassical buildings designed by Melchior Berri.
The collection spans over 5,000 years of history: from Egyptian and Near Eastern artifacts, to Greek, Etruscan, and Roman masterpieces, with a special focus on over 600 Egyptian artifacts, the famous collection of Greek vases, and high-quality classical sculptures, bronzes, terracottas, and gold jewelry.
The museum also includes the Skulpturhalle Basel, located near the University, which exhibits over 2,200 casts of ancient sculptures, including the complete reassembled Parthenon frieze.
