The show

The exhibition " Flames a la Frontera " (Lama on the border), was open to the public at the museum from 29 June to 18 November 2018.

The Great War changed the European continent and a significant part of the world. It began in August 1914 and ended with the lives of over eight million soldiers and an enormous number of civilians.

Spain remained neutral throughout the match. However, in the newborn Commonwealth of Catalonia and with Barcelona as its epicenter, the conflict had consequences for society as a whole: it affected the economy, politics, culture and the daily press, which, in turn, was subjected to to diplomatic and propaganda pressure. In the international order, the overwhelming sympathy of the Catalans for the allies was manifested through the enlistment of volunteers in the French Foreign Legion, a gesture that would reach a mythical character in Catalonia.

Following the commemoration of the centenary of the end of the war, this exhibition details the main aspects of the impact of the conflict on an officially neutral Catalonia and shows the multiple memories of this war that have survived to this day. A century ago the flames were on the border; today we still see smoking.

“It was very clear to us that Europe had caught fire everywhere. We had flames on the border ".

Josep M. De Sagarra, Memoirs.
