In the heart of Avignon, overlooking the Rhône and surrounded by historic walls, the Palais des Papes is the symbol of the temporal power of the Catholic Church in the 14th century. Built between 1335 and 1352 by the popes Benedict XII and Clement VI in less than twenty years, it is now the largest Gothic building in the world and a UNESCO heritage site since 1995.
Spanning over 15,000 m², the palace offers the opportunity to visit more than twenty rooms, including the Grande Chapelle, a symbol of medieval sacred architecture, decorated with frescoes by Italian masters such as Simone Martini and Matteo Giovannetti. Other notable spaces include the Grand Tinel, the Audience Hall, and the ancient papal chambers, adorned with splendid frescoes, embodying the opulence of the Avignon papacy.
