The Madonna of Childbirth by Piero della Francesca is a unique masterpiece of the Renaissance, depicting the pregnant Virgin in an innovative and solemn iconography. In the center of a finely decorated tent with motifs of pomegranates, symbolizing fertility and abundance, Mary stands with one hand on her side and the other pulling back the folds of her cloak, emphasizing her pregnancy.
On the sides, two symmetrical angels, created from the same reversed cartoon, lift the drapery of the tent, revealing the sacredness and centrality of motherhood. The fresco was created around 1455 for the church of Santa Maria di Momentana in Monterchi, a place linked to traditions of Marian worship and fertility rites.
In 1992, for conservation purposes, the artwork was restored and transferred to the current Museum of the Madonna of Childbirth, set up in the former elementary school of Monterchi, where it is still preserved and enhanced through a multimedia exhibition.
