The work is one of the two sketches of the altarpiece commissioned from the French classicist artist for St. Peter's Basilica in Rome (1628-1629), now preserved in the Vatican Pinacoteca. Refusing to idolize the statue of the god Hercules, the saint was brutally martyred by rolling his intestine to a winch.
