Mercedes Cuman was born in Milan where she lives and works. In the 1980s, she developed several artistic projects on themes such as "The personal is political, identity and differences". During those same years, she moved to Mexico and then traveled to South America, India, and Japan, embracing a nomadic lifestyle. Upon returning to Milan, she began her career as an illustrator collaborating at the Alchimia studio. Illustration remained her main activity throughout the 1990s.
