Sketch of the large Altarpiece of the Addolorata, created by Fedele Fischetti between 1775 and 1778.
The work, a small oil painted canvas, was recognized by the president of the Diocesan Museum Foundation, Don Angelo Mazzone, in a private collection in Naples and, after careful studies, identified in the famous "stain" that the diocesan archive records report arrived in Molfetta at the request of the bishop of the time, Mons. Gennaro Antonucci, in order to create a large altarpiece depicting the Addolorata to contrast with the canvas of the Assumption by Corrado Giaquinto, during the renovation works of the church of Sant' Ignazio di Loyola, which would be consecrated as the new cathedral a few years later.
