On the occasion of the Jubilee 2025, Italian dioceses are proposing projects to enhance the heritage preserved in places of worship and in ecclesiastical cultural institutions MAB (museums archives libraries), which tell the bond of communities with their heritage and among people and inhabited places. The Diocese of Molfetta Ruvo Giovinazzo Terlizzi is participating in the initiative through one of the particular aspects of its rich and varied heritage of faith and art, the papier-mâché statuary, recovering paths of religious experience that have marked and continue to mark the sacred daily and festive time. The sensitive and persuasive language of papier-mâché, capable of speaking to everyone with simplicity and immediacy, has played a decisive role in religious inculturation and in the formation of forms of piety and participation still very much alive today. The analysis of the reference heritage, traceable in the archives of the four cities of the Diocese of Molfetta and in the diocesan library, constituted the starting point for the project. Reconstructing the history of families, artisan businesses, commissions, which crossed the centuries XVIII-XX and relating them to the socio-cultural context of the time was the prerequisite for the creation of activities and paths that enhance these assets and the places of origin. The analysis and study activity, conducted by Dr. Francesco Di Palo of the Diocesan Museum Foundation and by Dr. Francesco De Nicolo of the Diocesan Cultural Heritage Office, allowed to rediscover a common thread that links our communities, highlighting the extraordinary value of the local artistic production that assumed the qualification of Molfetta papier-mâché, distinguished by artistic quality and iconography from the "Lecce papier-mâché". The new initiative of the Cultural Center aims to combine national themes of gift and community expressed by works of art with the enhancement of material testimonies such as statues modeled in papier-mâché, but not only...
