These four jugs decorated with black and sometimes also red paint, on a neutral clay background, were produced between 750 and 600 BC, a period in which Cyprus had intense contact with the surrounding regions, from Egypt to Mesopotamia, from Greece to the Levantine coast.
Cypriot ceramics is distinguished by its rich repertoire of abstract and figurative compositions and imaginative and exuberant style.
The vases exhibited here were intended for public ceremonies, funerary rituals or to be offered in sanctuaries.
